"Yesterday I was clever, so i wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself."
- Rumi

It is the recognition of the need for change that is the true beginning of one’s own transformation.  It is my belief that it is the most painful experiences in our lives that have the potential to inspire tremendous growth. Finding the path to personal growth can be challenging, but the more one learns to walk on this path, the more rewarding the transformation becomes.

My style is warm , down-to-earth, and creative, and I strive to provide a welcoming and safe environment for my patients to express themselves. I have a passion for working with individuals who are seeking a meaningful life and see value in deepening their self-awareness. I weave traditional and esoteric psychology, and work mainly from the transpersonal perspective. This encompasses the deepest dimension of who we are, seeing life as part of an unfolding journey toward being a more whole and complete human being.

More About Joanna...

I received my Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of San Francisco. Shortly after earning my Master’s Degree I completed an Integrative Medicine Education program, with specialization in Guided Imagery and Expressive Arts Therapy, at the Institute for Health and Healing in San Francisco. I also have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in both Cultural Anthropology and Art History from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

I began my career as a therapist in the acute care setting in a hospital in Northern California, where I worked with both individuals and families. After relocating to Southern California, I have worked as a therapist and case manager in a residential addiction treatment center for adults, as well as seeing both children and adults for individual therapy in the community mental health setting. I now work exclusively in private practice in Long Beach and Seal Beach.

I have experience helping children, adolescents, and adults overcome obstacles such as anxiety, trauma, depression, grief and loss, difficult life transitions, substance abuse, relationship dysfunction, and existential crisis. I take an integrative approach to treating clients, recognizing the individual needs of each person. I have trained in a variety of treatment modalities, including EMDR, cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavioral, psychodynamic, guided imagery, expressive arts, and solution focused therapy.
